Identifying and supporting Key Stage 3 pupils at risk of becoming not in education, employment, or training (NEET)

The National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) was commissioned by Lancashire County Council (LCC), with funding from The Careers and Enterprise Company (CEC), to identify and share best practice in early identification of Key Stage 3 (KS3) pupils at risk of disengaging from education and becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training).

This research was undertaken to address the following questions:

  • How are schools currently identifying KS3 pupils who are at risk of disengaging and becoming NEET?
  • How are the NEET risk factors identified by schools taken into consideration and used to inform interventions, including those related to careers?
  • What interventions are being delivered by schools that are perceived to be positively impacting (re)engaging young people and contributing to positive EET outcomes?
