The pupils at Astley Park School who are involved in the young enterprise programme all have SEND requirements and, as a result, the existing scheme required differentiating. The school needed to consider the individual needs of each pupil and to provide them with the ability to meet the desired outcomes of the enterprise scheme including Teamwork.
Having previously worked with mainstream pupils; the teacher was aware of the process of using the scheme to benefit the pupils and delivered the main parts of the programme by breaking the work into small steps and using differentiated tasks. This started with devising a name for the company and designing a logo which presented the pupils with the problem-solving situation.
Having decided by consensus on a name and logo by brainstorming their ideas, the pupils then looked at their own skills and qualities by deciding company roles. They presented a case for their role of choice and after voting, a board of directors was produced in which every pupil had a role
The teacher then introduced the ‘Plan, Do, Review’ process to the students, starting with planning to meet their obligations as a Year 11 class to organise:

. The Tuck Shop and Bacon Butty deliveries
The pupils brainstormed the MacMillan Coffee morning using the new job roles to spread the workload. They applied the same process to the Tuck Shop and Bacon Butty Deliveries and developed their knowledge and understanding by looking at the ‘Need to Review’ at each stage.
The result of delivering the programme in this manner allowed the pupils to successfully present the MacMillan Coffee morning and start both the weekly Tuck Shop and staff bacon butty deliveries every Friday morning. The pupils learnt how to ‘Plan and Review’ their actions making any changes they thought appropriate. Teamwork, respect and personal responsibility were discussed throughout the undertakings and how they can use the skills and knowledge going forward, both in and out of school.
The programme is up and running and the pupils are becoming more independent in the delivery of the Tuck shop each Wednesday and in producing the bacon butties every Friday morning. As the academic year progresses, the pupils will also need to plan and organise other school events. With the programme in place, they will have the framework set up to achieve this and raise additional funds for their Y11 Prom in June.
